    Wood engraving

Escher created Unicorns as a commission for the Asselbergs. The Asselbergs owned The Unicorn Press, and were well known art patrons in Holland. This Escher print was given by the Asselbergs to their friends to celebrate the New Year of 1950 to 1951. These were more than greeting cards.

Unicorns represents the most basic technique of creating different shades in a woodcut. Simple stripes varying in width and proximity give rise to five different shades of Unicorns.

This woodcut relates directly to the Symmetry 78.

This work is available.  The first person to mention the price of $3900, gets it for that (that's 10% off!) plus free archival framing and FedEx within the US.
