Fiumara of Stilo, Calabria
SKU: 138
Escher spent 11 years in Italy and traveled the southern part of the country extensively. This is one of his 13 Calabrian works. The city of Fiumara sits perched on a hilltop above a stony river valley safe from the flood of stones crumbling from the ancient mountains. Perhaps intentionally, Escher documented "order and chaos" with the city being the highly ordered use of stone creeping into, but dwarfed by, the chaotic rocks of nature.
