Escher’s words...regarding the monks:

    “Perhaps they are members of some unknown sect. It may be part of their daily ritual duty to climb these stairs for a few hours each day. It would seem that when they get tired, they are allowed to change direction and go downstairs instead of up. Yet both directions, though not without meaning, are equally useless.”

This is the first of two lithographs inspired by Roger Penrose’s impossible tri-bar.  To me, this print, more than any other, is an example of how beautifully subtle an impossibility can be...the very essence of Escher.
