    Mosaic 2 is Escher’s second non-repeating tessellation.  This strange menagerie exemplifies the childlike creativity that Escher cultivated throughout his entire life.   

    Escher wrote that his Mosaic prints demonstrated his two criteria for a good tessellation: color contrast and recognizability.  He said that when creating these jigsaw puzzles he felt as if he were a spiritual medium, controlled by the creatures that he conjured up, as if they decided on the shape in which they appeared.

    I am intrigued by the one inanimate object.  Who conjured that up, and why?  We will never know.

    This piece is in great condition with wide margins.  It is pencil signed and numbered by Escher.  An unsigned proof is also available.  Please email or call with any questions.
